What we do

The St Vincent de Paul Society is a leading provider of community support services and has been assisting people experiencing disadvantage in NSW for more than 130 years. Our people reach out to the most vulnerable in our community through our Conferences, Special Works and Vinnies shops. The Society’s mission is to shape a more just and compassionate society by offering a ‘hands up’ approach to people in need respecting their dignity, sharing our hope and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.

 

About the Service

Ability Links NSW is a key foundation in the NSW Government’s plan to reshape and improve the way people with disability, their families and carers in NSW are supported by placing them at the centre of decision-making. The St Vincent de Paul Society is working in partnership with Settlement Services International to deliver this initiative in Sydney Metro South. The program aims to facilitate social and economic inclusion in local communities through recreation, work, volunteering or other services.

The Role

In this role you will work within the local community to assist people with disability, their families and carers to be valued and active members of their community and facilitate their social and economic inclusion. You will provide a locally based first point of contact designed to improve access to, and engagement in, local community, mainstream services and disability services if necessary. You will need to see ability rather than disability, opportunity rather than obstacle. As well as working with individuals you will also be working within a community development framework with business and community groups to become more inclusive of people with disability.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Relevant experience or qualifications in human services or community development. 
  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with all people
  • Ability to apply a person-centred approach to service provision, social inclusion and community development principles
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision, manage a variety of tasks and display personal drive and integrity
  • Lived experience, or awareness of the impact of existing or acquired disability upon individuals, families, carers and the community
  • Flexibility, team work skills, and creative problem solving
  • IT competency, including the use of Microsoft Office programs
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and to travel to a range of locations in response to program needs
